Content Standard 1: Structure and Properties of Matter
Objectives:
- All matter is made up of atoms. Its structure is made up of repeating patterns and has characteristic properties. Matter is made of atoms and atoms are composed of even smaller components (i.e. protons, neutrons, and electrons).
Time Range: 2nd Quarter; Approx. 3 weeks
Suggested Teaching Strategies:
The following chemistry topics relate to the objective above and are reserved for introduction in Chemistry I:
- Describe atomic models:
- s,p,d,f orbitals
- isotopes
- average atomic mass
- electron configurations
- relate atomic model to the Periodic Table
- Study nuclear energy:
- half life
- subatomic particles related to nuclear chemistry
- practical applications of nuclear chemistry
- nuclear transformation equations
- fission and fusion comparisons
