Chinese I

Course Number:  3101

Grade Level: 11, 12

Prerequisite:  Recommend ‘C’ average in language arts

This is an introductory course offered through a grant.  The focus of the course will be determined after the placement of a Chinese teacher.

Offering of the course is contingent on placement of a teacher.  Also, there is no guarantee that a Chinese II course will be offered.

 

French I

Grade Level: 8, 9

Prerequisite:  Recommend ‘C’ average in language arts

This course provides a foundation in grammar, vocabulary, and culture.  Communication and self expression are the main goals.  Speaking and listening comprehension, as well as reading and writing skills, are emphasized.

 

French II

Course Number:  3112

Semesters:  2

Grade Level:  9, 10

Prerequisite:  French I, Recommend ‘C’ average or counselor recommendation and successful completion of quarterly assessment – French I.

The main goal is communication and self-expression within the areas of speaking, understanding, reading, and writing French.  A continuing study of grammar and vocabulary is included.  Geography and customs of French-speaking countries will be studied.   

 

French III Pre-AP

Prerequisite:  French II, recommend ‘A’ or ‘B’ or approval of instructor

Students will develop writing skills and speaking skills and will continue to build on their foundation of cultural and historical knowledge and understanding of the French-speaking countries. The purchase of a dictionary is recommended.

 

French IV/V AP

Course Number:  3103

Semesters:  2

Grade Level:  11, 12

Prerequisite:  French III Pre-AP, recommend ‘A’ or ‘B’ or approval of instructor

This course is equivalent to a third-semester college course in French.  The course will focus on refining language skills.  Selected pieces of literature will be studied and frequent writing assignments will be made.  Students will develop oral proficiency through class discussion and work with tape recordings.  Grammar and vocabulary will be extensively reviewed.  Students are encouraged to take the Advanced Placement Exam in French Language and will be prepared to take other French placement tests.   The purchase of a dictionary AND an AP workbook is recommended.

 

German I

This course provides an introduction to the basic language skills of comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing with primary emphasis on comprehension and speaking.  Basic German grammar is taught.  German culture is also presented through films, slides, and tapes.  The purchase of a dictionary is recommended. 

 

German II

This course provides continuing development of the four basic skills with emphasis in reading and writing ability.  Additional grammar, vocabulary, and cultural activities are introduced.  Audio/visual materials provide variety in class activities.  The purchase of a dictionary is recommended.

 

German III

This course is intended for students interested in improving proficiency in German.  Students will develop writing, reading, and grammar skills through classroom and independent-study projects. The purchase of a dictionary is recommended

 

German IV

Prerequisite:  German III, ‘A’ or ‘B’ or approval of instructor

This course will focus on refining language skills in preparation for the German Advanced Placement exam.  Along with language skills, history and culture will be further studied.  The purchase of a dictionary is recommended

 

Spanish I

Prerequisite:  Recommend ‘C’ average in language arts

Communication and self-expression in Spanish are the main goals.  The course provides a strong foundation in grammar, vocabulary, and culture.  The approach emphasizes speaking and listening comprehension as well as reading and writing skills. 

 

Spanish II

Prerequisite:  Spanish I, recommend ‘C’ average or counselor recommendation and successful completion of quarterly assessment – Spanish I

Communication and self-expression in Spanish are the main goals.  Oral comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing skills are stressed.  Additional study of grammar and vocabulary is included, as well as the study of the Hispanic culture

 

Spanish III Pre-AP

Prerequisite:  Spanish II, ‘A’ or ‘B’ or approval of instructor

This Pre-AP course is intended to be followed by level IV AP for serious students interested in improving proficiency in Spanish.  Students will continue development of grammar and vocabulary.  Students will use the second level to acquire new skills, develop an understanding of Spanish cultures, and use Spanish for effective day-to-day communication.  Readings from various sources will supplement the core text.  The purchase of a dictionary is recommended.

 

Spanish IV/V AP

Course Number:  3165

Prerequisite:  Spanish III Pre-AP, ‘A’ or ‘B’ or approval of instructor

This course is equivalent to a third-semester college course in Spanish and is for serious students interested in improving proficiency in Spanish.  The course will focus on refining language skills.   Students will develop writing skills and will build on their foundation of cultural and historical knowledge and understanding of the Hispanic world.  Selected pieces of literature will be studied and frequent writing assignments will be made.  Students will develop oral proficiency through class discussion and work with tape recordings.  Grammar and vocabulary will be extensively reviewed.   Students successfully meeting the requirements of this course will be encouraged to take the Advanced Placement Exam in Spanish Language.   The purchase of a dictionary is recommended.

 

Spanish in the Business World

Course Number:  3164

Semesters: 1 or 2

Grade Level:  11, 12

Prerequisite:  None

This is a course of communication in speaking and writing necessary in a job that deals with native Spanish speakers.  It is offered as an alternative language course for students desiring to use Spanish in business.  It will not focus on grammar or Spanish literature and is not intended to be a college-prep course.

1. Spanish in health/child care, travel, newspaper/radio (1 semester)

Students will learn to communicate effectively in spoken and written forms in Spanish using appropriate vocabulary and expressions.  There is no prior Spanish experience needed for this course, but Hispanic students and students with some experience will find this course easier.  This is a practical approach to enhance the student’s ability to communicate in both Spanish and English in the workplace.  Field trips are planned.

2. Spanish in banking, retail, education and food industry (1 semester)

Students will learn to communicate effectively in spoken and written forms in Spanish using appropriate vocabulary and expressions.  There is no prior Spanish experience needed for this course, but Hispanic students and students with some experience will find this course easier.  This is a practical approach to enhance the student’s ability to communicate in both Spanish and English in the work place.  Field trips are planned.

NOTE:  These classes are not meant to fulfill the college bound classes of Spanish I and II but if students do well in both these classes they could count as Spanish I credit for students who want to enroll in Spanish II.
