CAREER DEVELOPMENT

 

DRIVER EDUCATION - (One Semester)                                                                                           2710

Tuition funded.  This course is administered by the school district.

 

Prerequisite:  The course is taught only at the Mid High building.  Students must be 15 years of age the day the semester starts and may be placed as space is available.  Also, in accordance with HB2889, students must meet both enrollment and 8th grade reading proficiency requirements in order to enroll in Driver Education.  Courses are provided the hour before school, after school, and in the summer (June and July).

This course is designed to meet the standards established by the State Department of Education.  All students must complete at least six hours of "behind-the-wheel" instruction and thirty hours of "classroom instruction" to receive credit.  Letter grades and ˝ unit of credit will be given!!  This course provides information and practice activities needed to prepare for the basic driving exam.  The major purpose is to provide a foundation for the development of student driving skills.  Driver and passenger safety and the use of proper judgment in various situationsare emphasized.         NOTE:  Enrollment is first come, first served.

Competitive Academics is a course designed to prepare students for the quiz bowl games for the Academic Team.  Team members will meet for practice/class four days a week and will be present to participate in weekly tournaments with teams from other schools.  Attendance is mandatory as is willingness to participate in games.  Assignments will be given on a weekly basis, and grades will be determined by a combination of active, supportive participation and class work.  Failure to show good sportsmanship, refusal to follow sponsor expectations, or neglect of class assignments will result in being barred from participation and can result in a failing grade.  Students will participate in an initial tryout process consisting of a buzzer competition and a written exam to determine eligibility.  The student must also have completed the Alcohol and Illegal or Performance Enhancing Drug Contract.

This course will focus on current career fields, job hunting skills, resumes, applications and interviews.  Students may take this course concurrently with Career Lab in order to earn credit for having a job.  This course is offered only to students in the alternative high school program.

Wellness is a full-year study focusing on understanding how to become and stay healthy.  The program teaches students the skills necessary to weigh options, to make responsible decisions, and to develop behaviors that promote healthy lifestyles.  It includes topics in mental, social and environmental health, human development, nutrition, fitness, substance abuse, preventing disease and first aid.  One component of the class is physical activities outside or in a gym.  This course is offered only to students in the alternative high school program.

 

LIFE SKILLS I & II                                                                                                                  3255/3256

Life skills consists of group counseling on various topics such as anger management, healthy relationships, applying to college, money management, finding agencies within the community that help and learning about setting up an independent residence.  Students must attend all sessions of the group and complete a journal in order to earn credit.  Students may take one group per semester.  This course is offered only to students in the alternative high school program.

This course is designed to strengthen and expand students’ practical knowledge of English grammar and usage through use of the writing process.  Students learn editing, proofreading, and revision skills that they apply to a wide range of multi-paragraph compositions.  Additionally, students learn vocabulary for daily use.  All students will read and analyze a variety of fiction, poetry, drama, and nonfiction.

Students in this course will read, discuss, and write about selected works of World Literature representing many different cultures ranging from the ancients to the contemporary.  This class strengthens students’ reading and writing skills including vocabulary development.

This course will focus on composing and communicating ideas through language.  All students will be reading a variety of fiction, poetry, drama, and non-fiction from different time periods and cultures, relating them to human aspirations and life experiences.  Students will also be engaged in the five-step writing process.  This process includes, but is not limited to:  selecting, combining, arranging, and developing ideas in effective sentences, paragraphs, and often, longer units of disclosure.  A vocabulary program is included.  A short research paper may also be assigned.

This course will consist of a study of British Literature.  Students will be reading a variety of fiction, poetry, drama, and non-fiction from early Celtic Britain to contemporary Western writers.  Students will also be engaged in the five-step writing process.  This process includes, but is not limited to:  selecting, combining, arranging, and developing ideas in effective sentences, paragraphs, and often, longer units of discourse.  A vocabulary program is also included.  Students will complete a documented research project as well.  TO END

This course reinforces basic math skills.  It is designed for those students who need more preparation in the understanding of whole number operations including fractions and decimals.  Instruction is presented as real-life situations, and students are encouraged to see the relevance of math in their day-to-day lives.  A scientific calculator is recommended.

This course continues to reinforce basic math skills.  Skills covered are fractions, decimals, percents, geometry, and measurement.  Focus is on real-world problem solving.  A scientific calculator is recommended.

This course teaches students to have a basic grasp of mathematical computation.  It provides a variety of realistic, consumer-oriented applications (earning, saving, and spending money; budgeting and banking; preparing for careers) which reinforce and extend students’ basic mathematics concepts.  A scientific calculator is recommended.

 

BASIC MATH SKILLS IV                                                                                                                 6218

This course teaches students to have a basic grasp of mathematical computation.  It provides a variety of realistic, consumer-oriented applications (earning, saving, and spending money; budgeting and banking; preparing for careers) which reinforce and extend students’ basic mathematics concepts.  Students are expected to complete a six-month banking simulation where they receive a weekly pay check, make a weekly deposit, have weekly expenses for which to write checks, keep an up-to-date check register, prepare a monthly budget, and reconcile the monthly bank statement.  A scientific calculator is recommended.

This course is designed for those students who need more preparation to successfully complete Algebra I.  Its goals are to solidify arithmetic skills and prepare the student for algebra and geometry.  This class should be followed by Algebra I.  It does NOT count toward college core prerequisite, NCAA Clearinghouse, or OHLAP scholarship credit.  A scientific calculator is recommended.  This class will not count as a math credit for graduation, but it will count as an elective credit.

 


BASIC ALGEBRA I                                                                                                                           6221

Students will be taught the basic concepts of algebra in a step-by-step approach.  When appropriate, manipulatives will be used to provide a tactile/kinesthetic activity.  The emphasis of this course is on variables, properties of operations with real numbers, and solutions of linear equations and inequalities.  Manipulations of polynomials, basic operations with algebraic fractions, and elementary concepts of probability and statistics are included.  Heavy emphasis is placed on applications of algebra and problem solving.    A scientific calculator is recommended.

This course is a study of visual patterns and an introduction to relationships of geometric figures.  Emphasis is placed on application and problem solving.  Algebra is integrated throughout the course.  Dimensions of understanding are emphasized:  understanding of properties, mathematical relationships, and proofs; using geometric ideas in real situations and representing geometric concepts with coordinates, networks, or diagrams.  A scientific calculator is recommended.
