Saving and Recovering Your Gradebook

Saving Your Gradebook
Save IconTo save your gradebook, click on the File menu and select Save Gradebook (or click on the icon shown at right). Your gradebook is also saved when you shut down the program.

Autorecover
In case of emergencies, it is a good idea to set the program to create an autorecover file every 10 minutes or so. Pick the Edit menu and click on Preferences to set this up.

What if the server crashes?
Sometimes the IGPro server crashes. You need not lose unsaved grades you have input into your gradebook. Use the following procedure when disaster strikes:

  1. If the server goes down while you have a gradebook open, you will see this error message when you try to save or close your gradebook:

  2. Save Error Message
  3. You might first try "Retry" but if the server is down, that won't work.
  4. Click on Abort.
  5. You will then see some version of this dialog box:

  6. Save Dialog Box

Your dialog box may show an unusual drive in the top area next to Save in: and if you just try to save the file there, you may get an error message about not being authorized to save there.

  7. Don't panic! Just click on the down error next to that top entry and pick your local hard disk, drive C:

  8. Pick Drive C
  9. Then type in a meaningful file name next to File name:. A name incorporating today's date is a good idea, so you can easily find this particular file later:

  10. Save Filename

In the example, the teacher put his login name followed by some numbers indicating the date (12/02/02).

  11. Now click on Save to save your gradebook to your local hard drive, and exit the program.
  12. Later, after the IGPro server is back up and running, you will be able to log in. If you had some work you were unable to save to the server, you should get this message when you try to open your gradebook:

  13. Local Copy Question
  14. Click Yes and the a new dialog box will appear:

  15. Local Copy Select
  16. Be sure your local hard drive is selected in the Look in: entry. Then navigate to find the file you saved earlier, and click Open.

IGPro should then update your server-based gradebook with your locally-saved file, and you can then work normally, having lost none of your hard work.
