Creating & Arranging Seating Charts

Background

In this section you will be able to create and arrange your seating charts.

Warning: Sometimes the office redoes the "seats" file and this can destroy customized seating charts. If this happens, you have to repeat these steps to recreate your customized chart.

Directions

The original seating chart is an alphabetized list that cannot be rearranged. In order to be able to rearrange a seating chart you must first create a new chart. You can either create a duplicate from an existing chart or create a new chart and add selected students to the new seating chart.

Creating a duplicate chart:
  1. Open a class (refer to this figure).
  2. Click on Class in the menu bar.
  3. Click on Seating Charts. . . (refer to this figure).
  4. Click Alphabetic from the seating chart list to select (see below).

  5. Seating Charts

  6. Click the Duplicate button.
  7. This creates a duplicate seating chart called Alphabetic 1 (see below).

  8. Duplicated Seating Chart

  9. Close the Seating Charts window. You can now rearrange seats in the new seating chart. (See Arranging students in a new seating chart).

Changing the number of rows or columns in a seating chart

You can change the number of rows or columns in your seating charts.

  1. Open the Class menu and select Preferences and then select Class...

  2. Class Preferences

  3. In the popup window, specify the number of rows and columns you need.

  4. Class Preferences

Note: If you specify a large number of rows, you probably need to specify one more row than you will use. Then leave the bottom row of the chart empty. Otherwise, cells in that bottom row may be cut off so that you cannot see the attendance status of students in that row.

Create a new seating chart
  1. Select a class (refer to this figure).
  2. Click on Class in the menu bar.
  3. Click on Seating Charts. . .

  4. Seating Charts

  5. In the Chart Name box, type a name for your new seating chart.
  6. Click the Add button.

  7. Seating Chart Addition

  8. With the Seating Charts window still open, click the Student List button.

  9. Seating Chart Addition

  10. This will open your Student List window. All of your students are listed in the Students Out of Chart section of the window.
  11. Click, drag and drop students you want in your seating chart from the Students Out of Chart section to the Students in Charts section. Once they are moved, they will automatically appear in the seating chart (see below). OR you can directly drag a name onto a particular seat location in the chart. (Note that you may need to select the name, wait a moment for a box to appear around it, and only then try to drag the name over.)

  12. Moving Students

Arranging students in a new seating chart
