Mascot Tree
The timelapse video of the carving is also available on YouTube (but YouTube is blocked on in-district computers).
The week before Spring Break 2008 the figures of a College High Wildcat and a Bartlesville Bruin emerged from the stump of the massive old elm tree north of the science wing. After the historic tree succumbed to disease last year, the members of the College High School class of 1957 raised $3,000 to hire area tree sculptor Clayton Coss to carve the wildcat in memory of the Col-Hi mascot from 1940-1982. But that took only one branch of the massive stump, and for over 25 years Bartlesville High students have been Bruins, so the current mascot is also featured thanks to an additional $3,000 from the Class of 2008 and other current and former Bruins.
The stump will get an annual coat of varnish as well as regular treatments to ward off potentially destructive insects. Plaques have been affixed to each mascot acknowledging the donations that made it possible.
