Bartlesville High School: Building on Excellence
Phase One: Floodplain Development and Front Lawn Redesign
The New Haley Environmental Laboratory
The northeast corner of the original Haley Lab was fenced off to preserve it for the new lab. Subsequently the district acquired an additional 5 acres to the east of that area to expand the revamped lab toward the Pathfinder Parkway and Caney River. There is an aerial photograph of the campus which shows the new lab's boundaries.
A new pond was constructed in the lab area. (Click the above photo for enlargement.) In the photo, biology teacher Betty Henderson is standing near the south slope. Mrs. Henderson lobbied to have a new lab area created out of the original lab, and later to have the new pond regraded after the initial dig to provide science students with safe access to the water.
Environmental Science and other classes have used the Haley Lab since its redevelopment. The new lab area extends out toward the Pathfinder Parkway and a bend in the Caney River seen below. Since its construction, Betty Henderson has guided Boy and Girl Scouts improvement projects that provided a small bridge over a gully to provide access towards the Caney River, concrete benches around the pond for students and visitors, and bird boxes in several of the trees.
Broadband visitors can enjoy a 360-degree PixAround viewpoint positioned just south of the pond.
A stone with the original and new dedication plaques was erected in January, 2004.
