Bartlesville High School: Building on Excellence
Phases Two & Three:
The Bruin
A bronze bear statue, The Bruin, has now been installed in the lobby of the new Fine Arts Center and Field House of Bartlesville High School. The statue began as a dream for class members of 2000. They established a fund for the statue and the classes of 2001, 2002 and 2003 donated to the fund. From there, local families and businesses contributed money for the statue. 30 miniature replicas were sold for the project.
The Bruin was designed and sculpted by John D. Free, Jr., from Pawhuska. Earlier in 2005, BPS Superintendent Dr. Gary Quinn, BHS Principal Jane Sears, BHS Assistant Principal Chuck McCauley and BHS boys basketball coach Tim Bart visited The Bronze Horse, Mr. Free's Pawhuska studio. He gave the group a tour of the facility and showed them each step in the
process of creating a bronze statue.
The lower picture shows the bear when it was made of a hard foam substance and covered with a clay coat. The next step was to make a rubber mold of the pieces and brush on wax patterns to make another mold, with The Bruin then covered with bronze.
