Bartlesville High School: Building on Excellence

Athletics Needs
Improvement: Convert the 16 acres
southeast of the stadium (owned by the district) into practice
fields for football, soccer, softball and baseball. Provide
additional parking in this area. Make improvements to the John
C. Haley environmental study area that is part of this
parcel.
Current problems: BHS has no practice
fields for soccer, baseball and softball, so these teams must
travel each day during the season to other schools or
community facilities. This requires school transportation and
consumes practice time. The environmental study area needs
improvements to make it useful for class work, and therefore
has not been fully utilized for several years.
Improvement: New gymnasium with
flexible seating capacity of 2200 and adjacent new dressing
rooms and public restrooms.
Current problems: Main gym, with a
capacity of 1140, provides tight seating that is dangerously
close to the playing floor. Because the concrete bleachers are
fixed, there is little flexibility to hold various kinds of
events. During game days, warm-ups are a problem because of
the lack of practice areas. Without adequate seating capacity
and warm-up facilities, Bartlesville is not able to host
regional or special events. Entry to and exit from the
concession area is through narrow, congested stairways, and
the concession area itself can quickly become
overcrowded.
The concrete bleachers in the BHS gym are
located only 22 inches from the playing floor, creating
a safety hazard to players and fans
alike.
Inadequate restrooms are among the many
deficiencies in the BHS gym facilities. Neither student
nor public restrooms have hot
water.
