Bartlesville High School: Building on Excellence

Renovation Needs
Climate
Control
Improvement: Install new heating
and air-conditioning system throughout the school
building.
Current problems: Wide variation in
temperature from room to room cannot be controlled because of
the nature of the heat/air conditioning system. It takes 3-4
working days to change over from heat to cool and back again.
Students and faculty continually voice concerns about rooms
that are uncomfortably cold or hot.
Handicapped Access
Improvement: Bring entire
building up to accessibility standards.
Current problems: Current arrangements
for handicapped students are makeshift at best. To enter the
bottom floor of the annex, for example, handicapped students must go outside
and enter through a classroom. The classrooms in the stadium are also difficult to access, with ramps which are too steep
to accommodate a wheelchair.
The worst spot is the middle floor of the annex, where foreign language and an English class are taught. That floor is completely inaccessible by wheelchair, so when a handicapped student is taking a class normally held in a mid-annex classroom, the entire class must be moved to a more accessible area. Those classes lose access to the technology and materials located back on the mid-annex floor.
Inadequate Restrooms
Improvement: Renovate restrooms
throughout the building to make larger, to allow better
handicapped access, and to provide hot water.
Current problems: Overall, there are
too few restrooms, including none in the "annex". The student
restrooms do not have hot water. The restrooms adjacent to the
main gym are far too small for the crowds attending basketball
games and other events held in the main gym. Modifications to
provide handicap access have further reduced the capacity of
these facilities. Those restrooms that have been modified are
located in areas that can be inconvenient for students who
already have compromised mobility.
Parking
Improvement: Increase on-campus
parking to approximately 1,000 (tentative) cars. Also provide
a provide a half-oval drive in the front of the building for
convenient drop-off and pick-up.
Current problems: Current parking
capacity is 596, which is not sufficient to handle daily use
by student faculty and visitors and extremely inadequate for
special events such as football games. The surrounding
neighborhood absorbs the excess.
Designated Meeting Area
Improvement: Provide a room large
enough for group testing, faculty meetings, special
presentations, workshops, science fairs and additional
dining.
Current problems: The school has no
dedicated space for testing, for gatherings of two or three
classes or for faculty meetings. There is no place in the
building to test small groups of students who take specialized
tests for math competition, AP examinations, or ASVAB tests.
There is no place where two or three classes could combine for
a special presentation. Science fairs and other special events
cannot be held on-site because no space on campus is
appropriate for such activities.
Other
Renovations
Improvements: General renovations
will provide a safe area of loading/unloading buses, reduce
building security concerns, and eliminate the need for the
skywalk, for classrooms in the lower level of the stadium, and
for the "temporary" metal building now housing classrooms. The
entire building will be designed so students can move from one
area to another without leaving the structure.
Current problems: The area for loading
and unloading buses is extremely congested. There are security
concerns about the building's multiple entrances and about the
road between the stadium and main building. The substandard
metal building that houses two classrooms is poorly located
and in deteriorating condition. The skywalk between the main
building and the stadium leaks badly. There is no area of a
nurses station/clinic. Leaking expansion joints in the stadium
cause water to enter classrooms on the lower level.
This "temporary" building was installed in 1963 as an auxiliary cafeteria. It has been used for various instructional purposes since then, and currently houses two classrooms.
