Bartlesville High School: Building on Excellence

Science Needs
Improvement: Six new science labs.
Current problems: Most of the current
labs are too congested, which reduces the amount and quality
of work that students can perform and raises safety concerns.
Most rooms are only half the size recommended by the National
Science Teachers Association and are far below the minimum
size set by the state of Oklahoma. Several science rooms are
converted classrooms, with working areas only around the
perimeter, where it is difficult for the teacher to oversee
lab activities. Lab equipment must be brought out and put back
with each class, reducing useful time. There is very little
storage space and utilities are inadequate – breakers trip if
too much equipment is in use. BHS expects 100 more students
next year to be using the science facilities because of
Oklahoma's new science requirements calling for 3 credits to
graduate (formerly 2 credits).
This is not a storage area, but a
"physics lab" that students use on a regular basis in
BHS science classes.
Without suitable laboratory
benches, BHS students must perform physics lab work on
tables jammed along the walls. The arrangement makes it
difficult for students to observe and for teachers to
supervise experiments.
Physics experiments on makeshift
lab tables against the wall make it difficult for all
students to participate.
