Success For All is a comprehensive restructuring program designed primarily for use in elementary schools serving many disadvantaged students. The goal of Success For All is to try to ensure that every child will be successful in basic skills and that no child will be allowed to “fall between the cracks.” Innovative approached, family support programs, and other elements accomplish this goal.
The Success For All program begins with pre-kindergarten and kindergarten classes with the focus being on language development. Reading Roots curriculum is initiated in the first grade emphasizing the use of "shared stories" which have phonetically controlled vocabulary, auditory discrimination, and sound blending. The Reading Wings curriculum, used from the second grade level through the fifth grade, is centered on the district's basal or literature series, or on novels and trade books. Cooperative learning is the focus of Reading Wings. The reading block time for Roots and Wings is 90 minutes a day. All Roots and Wings students are tested every eight weeks and regrouped across grade lines for reading so that each reading group contains students at one reading level.
One-to-one tutoring is provided for 30% of first grade, 20% of second grade, and 10% of third grade. Tutoring sessions last 20 minutes a day and tutors follow the Success For All tutoring plan.
A Family Support Coordinator supports parents in insuring the success of their children. The coordinator focuses on attendance, coordination of outside social services, parent involvement, and student behavior.
