Even Start Family Literacy

What is Even Start?

The Bartlesville Even Start Program is a Family Literacy Program that provides families with a unique opportunity to further their education in a variety of ways as a family.
  Who is eligible?
The Bartlesville Even Start Program is available to all parents with children from the ages of Birth to Nine years of age and who are able to attend class with their children.

  Mission Statement:
“Our mission for the Bartlesville Even Start Program is to provide unique opportunities for parents to strengthen their knowledge and skills in how to support their child’s literacy development and education.”

  Goals for Even Start:
    • Engage in language-rich parent-child interactions.
    • Provide support for literacy in the family.
    • Hold appropriate expectations of the child’s learning and development.
    • Actively embrace the parenting role.
    • Form and maintain connections to community and other resources for meeting individual and family needs.

  Even Start Components:
    • Adult Basic Education (ABE)
Parents involved with Even Start are provided their very own teacher that helps them pursue goals they have set for themselves.  Many are in pursuit of their High School Diploma, others work on job and domestic skills.
    • Early Childhood Education (ECE)
Children involved with Even Start also have their own teacher. Even Start has two classrooms, a Birth to Three, and a Three-year-old class. The teachers in these classrooms are focus on the developmental stages of the child.  They provide developmentally appropriate activities that foster the child’s development and jump start their education.
    • Parent and Child Together (PACT)
PACT time gives the parents a chance to work one-on-one with their child.  Teachers guide the activities and the parents are there to teach their child. Whereas teachers are phenomenal, it is well documented that parents are the child’s first and best teacher.
    • Parent Support
Even Start acknowledges the difficulties and stress in being a parent.  That is the reason for our Mother and Father Support Groups. These groups allow parents a place to feel safe in airing frustrations and support one another in their quest of parenting.
    • Personal Home Visitation
Every family involved with Even Start is given a Family Specialist. The Family Specialist goes into the home and works with the parent and child on a variety of topics.  From potty training to discipline, the Family Specialist does it all.  One tool they use is the Denver II.  The Denver II is a developmental screening that acts as a guide for the child’s development and allows for early detection of possible delays.
    • Meals
Every family involved with Even Start become eligible for breakfast and lunch provided by the school.  This is an amazing time for parents to not only be given a meal, but also time to simply set and eat with their children.
