Back to School
The district is gearing up for the first day of classes for the new school term on Thursday, August 18, 2016. There are a number of related events and milestones throughout August.

School Supply Lists

Back-to-School Supplies

Parents are busily gathering back-to-school supplies, some taking advantage of the sales-tax-free weekend of August 5-7 when merchants do not charge state sales tax on shoes and clothing priced below $100. Many stores have back-to-school specials on, and the school district website has supply lists for Bartlesville's elementary schools and Madison Middle School has posted a supply list on its website.

Needy families could sign up through July 30 to receive supplies through The Washington County School Supply Drive program, and those backpacks will be distributed beginning on Monday, August 8 at 8:30 a.m. at St. Luke's Episcopal Church. The organization's president, Melinda Wesneski, has noted, "The line is very long in the morning. So, if you wait until the afternoon to pick up your supplies, you can pretty much count on staying out of the heat while getting your backpack or cinch bag in very little time.”

PreK and Kindergarten Screenings & Curriculum Nights

The dates and times for the Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten screenings and curriculum nights vary by school site. Please contact your elementary school for details.

Central Renovations

Central Middle School Re-Opens at Renovated Campus

Central Middle School's renovations are coming to a close. While the large-scale work in the new gymnasium and the ground level will still be wrapping up, all classes will start at the renovated campus on Thursday, August 18.

Central's staff will begin moving into their renovated spaces on Monday, 8/8, and its office will relocate on August 8-9. The three different grade levels of Central students will register for classes at the renovated campus on August 10-12. Central will have a public Open House for community members to tour the campus on Sunday, August 21, at 2 p.m.

Pre-Service Days for Teachers on August 15-17

Teachers will have pre-service days on August 15-17, including grade level and department meetings followed by a districtwide rally on the morning of Monday, August 15 at Bartlesville High School. Tuesday and Wednesday will include site-level meetings, some trainings, and time for teachers to prepare their classrooms.

Classes Begin District-Wide on Thursday, August 18

Classes at all school sites will begin on Thursday, August 18. The start of classes was originally set for a week earlier, but in April the Board of Education delayed the starting date to allow for more time for the massive renovations at Central Middle School.

Parent Night

Open House/Parent Nights on Wednesday, 8/17 for Elementary Schools and on Monday, 8/22 for Secondary Schools

Each of the six elementary schools will have their Open Houses for parents on Wednesday, August 17. Some are scheduled from 4 to 6 p.m.
Each of the three secondary schools will have their Parent Nights on Monday, August 22.
UPDATED: The Parent Nights at both Central and Madison are now slated begin at 6 p.m., while the high school program begins at 7 p.m.

Bond Issue Election

There will be two bond issue questions on the ballot at the District Bond Issue Election on Tuesday, August 23. Detailed information is available at BRUINBOND.COM.

No Snow Days in Revised District Academic Year Calendar

The final revision of the District Academic Year Calendar is posted on the district website. The start of classes was already delayed to August 18 and the calendar has shifted an elementary school parent/teacher conference day to October 28. The first semester is scheduled to end before Winter Break on Friday, December 16.

In the heat of August, the possibility of cancelling classes due to snow is a distant concern, but you should note that the revised academic year calendar has no built-in snow days. Any days missed for inclement weather will NOT be made up by students, since the district already exceeds state requirements on minutes of instruction. However, certified faculty will remain on 181-day contracts and thus will make-up any missed inclement weather days at the end of the academic year as non-student inservice days held after Memorial Day 2017.
