This week Kitchen Manager Beverly Parker at Hoover Elementary received a National Sodexo Experience Award. Those awards recognize individuals and teams who work in a unit to go above and beyond in their work.

Beverly played a heroic role in preventing what could have been a serious or tragic accident. Instead of a tragedy, Beverly’s actions created reason for celebration. During a meal service in September, Beverly had a second grader come to her with apparent signs of choking. Beverly's team took action and stopped other students from entering the service line while Beverly performed the Heimlich maneuver on the student. Beverly was able to free the obstruction. After the incident was over, she asked a volunteer sit with the student while Beverly completed service. The unexpected can happen at any moment; how we react truly demonstrates what type of person we are.

The immediate benefit was to the child that was choking. The secondary benefit was that this all occurred without mass panic in the cafeteria. Beverly's team took swift action and kept the situation calm.

Jonathan Beckloff, General Manager, said, “I am absolutely astounded how she saved a life and to her it was just another day at the office. I am highly impressed by this team and how they stayed focused on all children during a very scary moment. This is just above and beyond outstanding.”

Nominations for the award are submitted through an online database. Winners are chosen at the district level each month, and a regional winner is selected from the district winners. A national winner is later selected in the Campus and Schools categories. Beverly was a regional and national winner in the Schools category.

Thank you, Beverly, for going the extra mile to make a difference and improve the quality of life of the students you serve!
