Monya Brown, a kindergarten teacher at Wayside Elementary has been named the Bartlesville Public School District Teacher of the Month for September 2016 by Arvest Bank and Oakley-Chevrolet Buick.

In recognition of this honor, Mrs. Brown was presented a plaque and a $300.00 check by Stephen Colaw, Arvest Bank Senior Vice President and Trust Client Advisor, and David Oakley Jr., owner of Oakley Chevrolet-Buick.

Mrs. Brown achieved her Bachelor of Arts Degree and a Master of Education degree from Harding University in Searcy Arkansas. She holds Oklahoma teaching credentials in Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education and Middle School Social Studies. She has fifteen years teaching experience and is beginning her seventh year as an early childhood teacher at Wayside Elementary.

Mrs. Brown says “I knew at a very early age that I would become a teacher. The love of learning was instilled in me by my parents; both were educators. I spent my spring breaks in my Mother’s early childhood classroom observing and absorbing her gifts as a teacher. I wanted to be just like her. She loved her students first; then helped them grow academically, socially and emotionally. Every day I try to be like my Mother, a great role model for my students.”

Mrs. Brown said “I believe all children can learn. It is my job to support each child’s individual growth and development by creating an environment that makes all students feel safe and loved. Our classroom is a learning community built on positive relationships and interactive experiences. We try hard and we learn from our mistakes. We are little people practicing to be adults at work.”

Participating in Literacy First training has helped Mrs. Brown become a more effective reading teacher. She has used information from Literacy First training to set up literacy centers in her classroom. Her students are very excited about their work station time. The literacy centers give students an opportunity to practice their literacy skills independently and cooperatively with a partner and to practice self-monitoring their own behavior. Mrs. Brown says “Literacy centers are a good thing”.

Ken Copeland, principal at Wayside Elementary, said “Mrs. Brown is a very important role model in our early childhood center. Every morning she greets each student with a warm smile and an encouraging hug. During the day she explicitly models the activities and procedures her students are learning. And she always makes time to inform parents about the work students are doing at school. One of her favorite activities is learning and collaborating with the other teachers on the early childhood team.”

Mrs. Brown’s interest in community extends beyond her classroom. She has served on the Wayside Elementary leadership team and the district professional development committee. She is also active in her church and the Agape Mission.

Bartlesville Public Schools is proud to join Arvest Bank and Oakley Chevrolet-Buick in honoring Monya Brown as the Bartlesville Teacher of the Month for September.
