Five Bartlesville High School students earned Oklahoma Music Educators Association (OMEA) All-State Choir honors this year and performed with fellow state honorees at the annual concert on January 20 at downtown Tulsa’s Performing Arts Center.

Senior Garrett Lee was awarded a three-year medal for earning All-State Choir honors in grades 10, 11, and 12. Joining Lee in the All-State Mixed Chorus were junior Brooke Marshall and sophomore Kaimron Schoonover

The OMEA Mixed Chorus was under the direction of Mack Wilberg who is the conductor of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. A professor at Brigham Young University, his compositions and arrangements are performed and recorded by choirs throughout the world.

Kaimron Schoonover was also one of five Oklahoma students named to the National Association for Music Educators (NAfME) All-National Chorus which performed in late November 2017 at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida. The conductor was also an Oklahoman: Z. Randall Stroope of Oklahoma State University in Stillwater.

The OMEA All-State Treble Chorus included junior Olivia Wilt and junior Emily Nordhues. The conductor was Andre J. Thomas, a distinguished composer/arranger and recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Collegiate Choral Organization.

Four BHS freshmen students also earned All-State honors from the Oklahoma Choir Directors Association (OCDA). Named to the All-State Mixed Chorus were Bryanna Swan, Nathaniel Vilardo, and Carlie Pool, who earned her three-year medal for grades seven, eight, and nine. Sophie Walker also earned a three-year medal as a member of the All-State Treble Chorus. The OCDA annual concert was held on January 13, 2018 at the First Church of the Nazarene in Bethany, OK.

The OCDA Mixed Chorus conductor was Greg Gilpin, a composer from Indianapolis, IN, while the OCDA Treble Chorus was under the director of Pearl Shangkuan, Chorus Master for the Grammy-nominated Grand Rapids Symphony.

“These students are credited as the top singers in the state,” commented BHS Choir Director Margie Green. “They worked for months outside of class on rigorous music and went through two rounds of auditions against 1,800-plus students to earn membership in this elite chorus. These students are stellar and are wonderful representatives of the BHS Vocal Music Program and Bartlesville Public Schools.”
