Alex Claussen, who has taught instrumental music at Bartlesville High School since 2008, has been named the 2016 Oklahoma Bandmasters Association Director of the Year.

Claussen was surprised by the announcement in late July at a ceremony at the Renaissance Hotel in Tulsa. He was selected for the award by his fellow band directors across the state.

The award was presented by Wendy Benford, who taught band in Bartlesville until 2015, when she was named the band director for Deer Creek Public Schools near Edmond.

Mr. Claussen's roots in Oklahoma music run deep. His father, Jerry, was a president of the state bandmasters association and inducted into its Hall of Fame in the 1990s. Alex himself was a president of the association a decade ago.

Mr. Claussen came from the town of Kansas, Oklahoma and graduated from the University of Central Oklahoma in 1996. He was previously a band director in Duncan and Sapulpa before coming to Bartlesville in 2008.

He is currently the president of the Oklahoma Music Educators Association. He has led the Bartlesville Bruin Brigade marching band and concert bands to high honors at the state and national levels and has taken them to perform in foreign countries. He is also known for directing annual Bartlesville Tuba Christmas performances which attract tuba and euphonium players from a multistate region.
