Twenty-four Bartlesville elementary school teachers spent three days of their first week of summer break training on new STEM modules that will be piloted in the district’s elementary schools next school year. Oklahoma State University and Project Lead the Way (PLTW) conducted the 24-hour training in the Freshman Academy Conference Center at Bartlesville High School. The 24 participants are PLTW Launch Lead Teachers who will train other teachers at their sites on the new modules. A computer science module will be piloted next school year, with additional modules in engineering and biomedicine coming in later years.

Ms. Dianne Martinez, the district’s Executive Director of Elementary and Middle Schools, facilitated the training. “The elementary teachers experienced the Launch curriculum in the role of the student. They collaborated to build simple machines, learn about body structures, and to write simple computer code,” Martinez said. “They will facilitate teacher training at their sites for the K-5 classroom teachers who will be implementing Launch next year. Exciting STEM learning times are in the future of all our K-5 elementary students next year!”

Every kindergarten through fifth grade classroom teacher will participate in a one day Launch training on August 15 at their site facilitated by the Lead Teachers. This training will prepare other teachers to implement the Launch program in their classroom.

PLTW Launch is the next step in expanding the STEM program in the Bartlesville school district.  Launch provides the curriculum, teacher training, and tools necessary to engage elementary students in STEM: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.  By implementing Launch, the district will provide a continuous STEM pathway for students from elementary through high school.

Funding for the district’s pilot year of PLTW Launch has been provided by an $85,000 Challenge Grant from the Bartlesville Public Schools Foundation and community partners as well as a significant contribution from ConocoPhillips that will be announced later in June.
