A crowd of families, friends, and supporters gathered at the Bartlesville High School commons on Sunday, August 14, 2016 for the Commencement ceremony for the Bartlesville Family Learning Center.

Thirteen students were honored who have earned the equivalent of a high school diploma by passing General Educational Development (GED) exams. The students overcame the obstacles which had not allowed them to graduate with their high school class. Overall, 37 students passed their GED exams between August 2015 and July 2016.

Dr. Stephanie Curtis, the school district's Executive Director of Personnel and School Support, hosted the event and introduced the guest speaker, Amanda Gutierrez.

Ms. Gutierrez is a GED graduate who went on to earn both a bachelors and a masters degree with 4.0 GPAs to become a counselor. She shared her story of hard work, perseverance, and ultimate success.

Superintendent Chuck McCauley also addressed the graduates, sharing the story of how his own father dropped out of high school and later earned a GED, "changing the trajectory of our lives." He congratulated them on their achievement and echoed Ms. Gutierrez's remarks that their story of success has only begun.

Mr. McCauley presented each graduate with a diploma and they were also congratulated on stage by Josh Waddell, who will be directing the programs in 2016-2017, along with Ms. Gutierrez and various GED teachers and testing administrators.

Graduates and their families were invited to share in punch and cake after the ceremony.

The Bartlesville Adult Learning Center has relocated from its former home at the Will Rogers Complex on the east side of Bartlesville to new quarters in the bottom level of Custer Stadium at Bartlesville High School. The Center offers classes during the day, afternoon, and evening hours. The flexibility allows students to pursue their GED diplomas while working and/or raising a family.
