Two experienced Bartlesville educators have been approved for administrative positions in the secondary schools for the 2017-2018 school year. At the Bartlesville Board of Education meeting on Monday, April 17, the board approved a recommendation from Superintendent Chuck McCauley that Ariel Ortega become the new Assistant Principal at Central Middle School and that Matt Hancock become the new Principal of Bruin Academy and Assistant Director of Athletics and Activities.

In February, the Board of Education adopted a cost-cutting plan to streamline the district’s administrative positions. In March, Ryan Huff was named to the new position of Director of Athletics and Activities. Matt Hancock, who is currently an Assistant Principal at Madison Middle School, will assist Mr. Huff while also serving as the Principal of Bruin Academy for the 2017-2018 school year. Bruin Academy is the district’s alternative high school program to assist students who are behind on credits for graduation. Madison Principal Joey Eidson will soon lead interviews for someone to replace Mr. Hancock for the next school year.

Mr. Hancock has been in the district since 2008. For the past four years he has served as Assistant Principal at Madison Middle School. Before that he taught social studies subjects at Bartlesville Mid-High for five years and helped coach the Bruin football and track teams. Prior to his time in Bartlesville, he taught social studies and coached football and weightlifting in Muldrow. Mr. Hancock has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Oklahoma, a master’s degree from Southwestern Oklahoma State University, and, like Mr. Huff, is currently working on a doctorate in Public School Administration from Oral Roberts University.

Mr. Hancock said, “I am extremely pleased to begin a new chapter with the students and faculty of Bruin Academy at Bartlesville High School. This school district is very special to my family. The ability to serve the Bruin Academy is inspiring and offers an important opportunity to connect and build relationships with students and faculty. I look forward to working with all activity sponsors and coaches to continue building valuable community relationships and to ensure that our programs are operating at the highest level.”

The school board had already named Keri Gardner as the replacement for Ryan Huff as Principal of Central Middle School. Ariel Ortega, who has taught vocal music at Central since 2009, will assume the Assistant Principal position that Ms. Gardner will be vacating. Mr. Ortega was both Central’s Teacher of the Year and the district’s Teacher of the Year in 2015-2016, and has held leadership positions in both state and local choral associations. Prior to teaching in Bartlesville, he was a choral director for seven years at schools in Houston, Texas. He has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas at Austin and a master’s degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Houston-Clear Lake.

Mr. Ortega commented, “I am looking forward to continuing to work with our amazing staff and students in this new role at Central Middle School. I'm also excited to join the excellent administrative team we have in the Bartlesville School District.”
