McCollum, Reel, and Leupp receive State Arts Awards

Three Bartlesville High School students were awarded State Superintendent Awards for Arts Excellence at a ceremony held at the Scottish Rite Temple in Guthrie on April 12, 2016. The awards were presented by the Oklahoma Alliance for Arts Education, State Superintendent of Public Instruction Joy Hofmeister, and the Masonic Fraternity of Oklahoma. 153 students from across the state who excelled in Band, Dance, Drama/Theatre, Orchestra, Piano, Visual Art, or Vocal disciplines were honored at the event. BHS senior Emily Reel was one of 25 recipients for Band. At BHS, she is led by Senior High Band Director Alex Claussen. BHS senior Emily Leupp and junior Katie McCollum were two of the 25 Vocal recipients. They are led by BHS Choir Directors Marjorie Green, Tamara Walker, and Micheal Stevens, who were all in attendance for the awards ceremony.

Emily Reel is the daughter of Larry and Shona Bates. She is a member of the Bruin Brigade, serving as Drum Major for two years. She was an All-State Band Member for 2015 (tenor saxophone) and All-District Honor Band for 2012-15 (alto saxophone and tenor saxophone). She is a member of National Honor Society, National Honor Society for High School Scholars, and National Technical Honor Society. Emily has been on the BHS Honor roll from 2012-2015 with a 4.0 GPA. She has been accepted to the University of Oklahoma, where she plans to obtain her Bachelor’s Degree in Music Arts and march with the Pride of Oklahoma band. After graduation, Emily plans to work for “Music for All” or “Drum Corps International”, both world-renowned music organizations.

Emily Leupp was one of only four honorees chosen to perform at the awards ceremony. She sang Claude Debussy’s “Nuit d’etoiles” (Starry Night), accompanied on piano by Marjorie Green. Emily is the daughter of Roderick and Stephanie Leupp. She has been named to District Honor Choir six years, All-State Women’s Choir one year, All-State Mixed Choir three years, and the NAfME All-National Mixed Choir Honor Ensemble this past year. She has also been involved in National Honor Society for four years and Interact Club for two years, serving as secretary. She has been cast in four BHS musicals, including her upcoming role as Ruth in “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” May 6th-8th at the BHS Fine Arts Center. Emily has taken six years of private voice lessons from Nita Wakely and Celeste Barrett. She plans to attend Oklahoma State University next year majoring in Civil Engineering.  

Katie McCollum is the daughter of Alex and Karen McCollum. She has been named to the All-State & District Honor Choirs the last three years, as well as the NAfME All-National Mixed Choir Honor Ensemble this past year. She has participated in National Honor Society and has been named to the Principal’s Honor Roll for three years. Katie has been cast in several BHS dramas and musicals and will soon be portraying Milly in “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers”. Katie has also appeared in five Children’s Musical Theatre of Bartlesville’s summer musicals, and will be playing Belle in this summer’s “Disney’s Beauty and the Beast”. Katie has studied dance for eleven years, played violin with the BPS Orchestra for six years, and has taken private voice lessons with Everett Music Studio for four years. Katie plans to study musical theatre in college.
