Anna Mims, a kindergarten teacher at Ranch Heights Elementary, has been named the Bartlesville Public School District Teacher of the Month for May by Arvest Bank and Oakley-Chevrolet Buick.

In recognition of this honor, Mrs. Mims was presented a plaque and a $300.00 check by Stephen Colaw, Arvest Bank Senior Vice President and Trust Client Advisor, and David Oakley Jr., owner of Oakley Chevrolet-Buick.

Mrs. Mims is a graduate of Oklahoma Wesleyan University and is completing her eighth year as an early childhood teacher with the Bartlesville School District.

Mrs. Mims remembers walking through her high school thinking “teaching is what I want to do.  I want to be a science teacher.”

Having children of her own helped her refocus that dream and become an elementary teacher. She said “I just love spending my day with students who are engaged in discovering and learning with great enthusiasm; just like in a high school science lab.”

Mrs. Mims said “I believe when you meet students where they are academically and emotionally they can and will learn. I try very hard to provide a classroom that is a safe, secure and respectful place so my students can take risks, try new things and experiment to find answers and develop new skills. “

Attending Data Teams training has helped Mrs. Mims develop greater insight into the importance of focusing on “why” students are making mistakes or have misconceptions while mastering a concept or skill. The kindergarten data team has successfully used the data team process to form small reading groups that focus on a specific skill or objective. Mrs. Mims said “It is exciting to see students learning at higher levels and seeing increased growth through this process.”

Mrs. Mims is passionate about helping new teachers become highly trained, effective teachers. She welcomes student teacher into her classroom to do their practicums and is working with the education department at OKWU to pilot changes in the OKWU student teacher program.

Kevin Brown, principal at Ranch Heights Elementary, said “I value Mrs. Mims ability to help our smallest students develop a curiosity and wonder about their world and how things work. At the same time she has a special skill for helping them learn how to communicate, cooperate and respect each other and the adults who help them. She cares deeply about each of her students and takes extra care to make sure that each student is successful.”

Mrs. Mim’s interest in community extends beyond her classroom. Her husband is a Bartlesville police officer and she often helps with the activities that support community policing activities such as fund raising for the random acts of kindness campaign.

Bartlesville Public Schools is proud to join Arvest Bank and Oakley Chevrolet-Buick in honoring Anna Mims as the Bartlesville Teacher of the Month for May.
