The Washington County School Supply Drive is back for another year of helping students and their families.

The organization, known for its “Pack the Backpacks” effort, is now in full swing to provide school supplies for needy students in the Bartlesville, Dewey, Caney Valley, Copan, Osage Hills and Bowring public school districts. Last year, more than 2,400 students were given supplies and a new backpack or cinch bag. In addition, more than 200 youngsters were assisted with leftover supplies from the effort.

For those who receive supplies, a voluntary donation of $5 per family is requested so that the program can continue to help students in need for years to come.

From now through July 30, parents or guardians of students can sign up to receive supplies through the program at CONCERN, Agape Mission and the Mary Martha Outreach. Sign-ups can be done during normal business hours, and applications are available at all three locations.

On Monday, Aug. 8, beginning at 8:30 a.m. at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, the WCSSD will distribute a backpack or cinch bag to each student containing the supplies they need for their respective school and grade level.

“The line is very long in the morning,” notes WCSSD president Melinda Wesneski. “So, if you wait until the afternoon to pick up your supplies, you can pretty much count on staying out of the heat while getting your backpack or cinch bag in very little time.”

The WCSSD is a locally run non-profit organization which has been serving area students in need since 2001. Monetary donations are always appreciated and can be sent to: WCSSD, P.O. Box 2031, Bartlesville, OK 74005 or you can donate online at www.packthebackpacks.org.

Those who would like to donate new school supplies and backpacks to the WCSSD are invited to drop them off at these Bartlesville locations: St. Luke’s Episcopal Church (210 E. 9th St.), Tallgrass Estates (2633 Mission Dr.) or Sitel (3001 Frank Phillips Blvd.).

Volunteers are being sought for this year’s effort. They will be needed on Saturday, Aug. 6 (9 a.m.to pack backpacks and/or 2 p.m. to set up supplies), Sunday, Aug. 7 (1 p.m. to pack backpacks), and on Monday, Aug. 8 (8:30 a.m. to distribute backpacks) and Tuesday, Aug. 9 (9 a.m. to distribute backpacks). All of the activities will take place at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church.
