Canvas ready for 2017-2018 across grades 6-12

Canvas is online and ready for the 2017-2018 school year and can be used by teachers and students across grades 6-12. It is not, however, licensed below grade 6, so elementary school teachers and students should not access the service.
Please be aware that you can see current schedule information in Canvas but bear in mind that schedules will be in flux during student registration and as staffing is finalized. So please refrain from contacting site personnel about what you see in Canvas until teachers report back on August 14.

Heaviest use this year will be in the Freshman Academy since those students are receiving Chromebooks to use at school and at home. The teachers in Freshman Academy will be expected to begin using Canvas for their course calendars and to create, submit, and grade at least one digital assignment each quarter.

Teachers in grades 10-12 will be asked to begin explore using Canvas, but since their students do not yet have Chromebooks, they likely would find the most useful aspects to be the Course Calendar function and using Canvas as a way to allow students to download copies of misplaced or forgotten assignments and for long-term absences.

Training in 2017-2018

Most training will continue to focus on grades 9-12 since middle school students will not receive Chromebooks until 2019-2020, but an online training course is now available for teachers in grades 6-8.

Workshops for 9-12 Teachers

  • EventBrite invitations to optional workshops on 8/2 and 8/8 were emailed to BHS teachers by Paula Amen during the last full week of July. Each day will have a morning session on setting up your course(s) in Canvas and an afternoon session on digital assignments.
  • The same sessions on setting up courses and digital assignments will be offered to interested teachers at BHS on the morning of Wednesday, August 16.
  • Additional training and support sessions will be offered before and after school and during planning periods during the 2017-2018 school year.

Kung Fu Canvas

9-12 teachers will continue to have access to the online Kung Fu Canvas for Bruins training program, and its equipment awards, until June 2018. Visit KUNGFUCANVAS.ORG for more information.

Canvas Challenge for 6-12 Staff

Canvas Challenge
All staff members in grades 6-12 may choose to take the online Canvas Challenge for Bruins training program. They should request access by sending an email to that effect to Granger Meador using their district email account.

While there are no equipment awards for this program, the tentative plan is to revamp Kung Fu Canvas for Bruins and its equipment awards in the summer of 2018 and begin offering the updated program to classroom teachers across grades 6-8 and new teachers in grades 9-12 in 2018-2019.
