August 18, 2008

Dear Parent(s),

The first three days of school have gone very well.  The children seem to feel happy, safe, and secure.  They are kind, helpful, polite, and (for the most part) do a good job of staying on task. J This is a very sweet group and I thank you for sharing them with me.  However, there are times when things occur between children that I am not aware of.  If your child makes you aware of any behavior that makes them feel intimidated, worried, or unsettled please let me know so that we can take care of it right away.

This week I will be assessing your children’s spelling and reading skills.  Our only homework will be reading.  They will be taking home their book(s) of choice from my classroom library.  Please fill in the Reading Log in this folder as per the example provided.  We have gone over how to choose an appropriate book and I will be asking them to take home a book that is not too hard, not too easy, but just right.  This means they may not know all of the words but they should be able to read the vast majority.  If your child sails through the book at high speed, it is too easy.  If your child needs help with more than the occasional word it is too hard.  Please make a note in the Reading Log as to whether the book was too hard, too easy, or just right.  Please ask your child some questions about the book in order to assess your child’s comprehension.  Some suggestions are provided in the second plastic sheet of the Home Folder.

Today the children began trading classes for math as part of the school district’s implementation of “flexible cluster grouping.”  You will learn more about this at Curriculum Night.

Biography

I was born in 1954 in Killeen, Texas.  My father was career army so we moved every year.  I know what it is like to be the new kid in school so; consequently, I understand the importance of helping children feel comfortable in the classroom.  I have been married to a wonderful man for 35 years and have been blessed with two incredible daughters who are the joy of my life.  I graduated cum laude in 1993, from Louisiana Tech University with a BA in elementary education.  I have lived in Bartlesville and have been teaching second grade at Hoover for the past twelve years.  My children are grown and off on lives of their own now, so I take even greater pleasure in working with my second graders.  I delight in their learning and learn from them every day.  I believe that children are our future and that parents and teachers must work together in order to help children be the best they can be.  I strongly encourage parents to share any questions or concerns they may have during the year and I strive to meet with parents at times that are convenient to them.
