Classroom Rules:

Ø      Treat others the way you want to be treated

Ø      Take care of classroom and school property

Ø      Follow Directions

Plan of Privilege:

In our classroom, we do not have a Discipline Plan.  We have a Plan of Privilege.  Students are taught

it is a privilege to be in the classroom, and I will work with them to keep them there.  We have rules the students helped create based on their hopes and dreams for the year.  We also have logical consequences, which are ways that I will help them maximize their learning experience while in 3rd grade.

I recognize not all students will follow the rules 100% of the time.  When children make mistakes in following the rules, I’ll help them solve the problems caused by their mistakes through the use of “logical consequences.”  Logical consequences are not punishments.  They are ways to help children to see the effects of their actions, repair the situation, and learn to do better the next time.

There are three basic kinds of logical consequences:

Take a break – If a child is losing self-control, s/he goes to a designated spot in the room to take

a break from the action in which misbehavior is occurring.  This is a short break for the child to take a few breaths, relax, calm down and gain self-control. The child comes back as soon as s/he has regained control.

Loss of privilege – If a child misuses a material or acts out during an activity, s/he will be told to stop using the material or doing the activity for a short period of time.  The privilege will be restored when the child and teacher have talked about how to prevent a similar problem in the future.

“You break it, you fix it” – If a child damages something or hurts another’s feelings, s/he will try to fix the damage.  In the case of hurting another’s feelings, the child might offer an apology of action – writing a card, helping with an activity, making an illustration, or taking some other action beyond verbally saying sorry.

My goal is to help children believe in their ability to create a caring learning environment.  Learning to live by the rules they’ve created is an important step.

What We Learn:

Morning Meeting:  Our Hopes and Dreams for the year, making rules for our classroom so that we can

accomplish our Hopes and Dreams, and learn how to have a Safe, Efficient, Friendly,

                            Caring Classroom.

Word Study:         Spelling words through a word study approach using Word Sorts, Study Buddy System

(High Frequency Words), and Word Wall activities.

Reading:               Teaching appropriate strategies and skills so that students can learn to read and learn

from reading, such as predicting, monitoring predictions, and making connections. Also

teaching comprehension strategies to help students understand what they are reading,

not just remembering. Having a balance between reading a lot and equipping our students

with the knowledge of using skills and strategies are important not just to struggling

readers but to all readers.  We read books from many different authors such as Laura

                           Ingalls Wilder and Beverly Cleary.

Writing:              Knowing what topics to write about, the process of writing, sharing our ideas, and

Reflecting on what we learn.  Several research projects.

Math:                  Patterns and Algebraic reasoning; Number Sense; Number Operations and Computations;

Geometry and Measurement; Data Analysis and Probability.

Science:               Earth Materials, Sound, Water, Food Chains, and Human Body.

Social Studies:     Geography, History, Communities, Economics.
