I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you and your child to music.

Studying music can help your child develop physical coordination, timing, memory, language skills, and the mental discipline needed for mathematics.  Further studies say learning music helps children develop right-brain skills, creativity and abstract thinking.  I have many activities planned in the curriculum that will spark and develop your child in the areas just mentioned.

I would like to share with you my thinking on the role of the vocal music program in your child’s development.  Music can be a very rewarding experience for your child.  I believe that music is for everyone and that singing is a basic activity since the voice is the primary instrument and we all have one!

I believe that everyone has a singing voice and deserves the opportunity to learn how to use their singing voice.  In teaching the children to sing, they will learn to match pitch with others in the class, sing with the best tone possible, and learn correct diction.

My music program is more than singing...it is a study of the various instruments that produce sound and the development of an appreciation for a variety of musical styles.

I will utilize movement activities, beat, competency activities, exercises in reading music notation and various activities in instrumental playing.  There will also be various units about composers, instruments, musicals, etc.

There is much to cover in a school year of music.  I enjoy having the opportunity to help your child along in the educational process, through music.

I follow the state, national and district guidelines of music curriculum.

 Current Projects/Announcements

This year at Hoover we are learning about healthy food choices.  We started out the school year with our second annual health fair in the cafeteria on back to school night.  Many students and their parents we able to try some healthy snacks and take home some healthy recipes.

To help the students learn even more about healthy choices, I have found many songs for us to learn in music.  The first unit is starting this week and will continue now and then all through the school year.  Be sure to ask your student about the songs that they are singing in music.

The 4th and 5th grade classes, they were challenged to create some musical menus.  They were to take 1 musical word and 1 food word and combine alliteration or rhyming to make nutritious musical menus.   The winning class received a nice formal lunch with one of the winning menus served.  Here are a few of the menu items that were created:

Guitar garlic bread            Bluegrass breaded chicken         Presto Pepperoni Pizza           Mozart  Meatballs           Piano pie

Harmony hamburger         Composer corn                              Trombone Tacos                      Tempo tater tots              Bongo brownies

THIS IS THEIR ANNUAL SPRING PROGRAM

Our students strive to perform to the best of their ability while on stage.  In order to make the moment as special as possible for everyone, I would like to suggest the following audience etiquette guidelines based on the guidelines from a well known performing arts institute:

v     Be on time.  Avoid distractions by arriving a few minutes early.

v     Remain seated during the program.  If you must leave, enter and exit only between songs.

v     If you bring a small child, we request that you sit at the end of a row, so that you can leave quickly and quietly if the need arises.

v     If you have a pager, cell phone or watch that has an audible alarm, please be sure it is turned off during the program, or turned to silent.

v     Unwrap all cough drops or throat drops that you might be needing, before the program starts.

v     Do unto others as you would have them do unto you!

Thanks for being a great supportive audience for your students!
