Abstract Sculptures

-

Students are allowed to choose a limited number of shapes of cardboard and given a six inch square to build their sculpture on. They may start with an idea in mind of what they want their finished sculpture to look like, but most students will work in a more intuitive manner. We talk about abstract artists who work in this way. Even when working in this way their sculptures must have a message or meaning to them. I have students give their sculpture a title to help the viewer understand the message of the piece. We talk about meaning in abstract art. I want students to understand that the meaning of the sculpture does not have to be something concrete, but can be a feeling or idea.
