The Bruin family is looking to make a difference for one of its own this year. With Make A Difference Week approaching – it is scheduled from May 5-9 throughout the Bartlesville Public School District – Bartlesville High School has several fundraising events planned which will aid senior John Gregory, who is battling cancer, and his family. “It would be great if we could top the amount which we raised last year, which was about $5,000,” says BHS librarian and student council sponsor Kim Lashbrook, who is helping to coordinate all of the M.A.D. Week events at BHS. “I think it's great that we have this opportunity to help one of our own students.” M.A.D. Week activities emphasize the importance of giving back to those in need. The Second Annual M.A.D. Dash – a five-kilometer road race and one-kilometer fun run – is scheduled for Saturday, May 10 on the BHS campus. Entry fees are $20 for adults and $15 for students while donations will be accepted as well. All check donations on behalf of BHS toward M.A.D. Week can be made out to “Bartlesville High School” (with “M.A.D. Week donation” in the subject line) and mailed to Kim Lashbrook; c/o Bartlesville High School; 1700 Hillcrest Drive; Bartlesville, OK 74003. A free t-shirt will be included with the entry fee for the M.A.D. Dash, which features a course certified by USA Track & Field. Entry forms can be picked up on the BHS campus or downloaded online at www.bps-ok.org , along the left side of the page. Pre-registration entry forms must be postmarked by May 3 and forms will be accepted on the race day as well. Entry fees can be mailed to: BHS Student Council; 1700 Hillcrest Drive; Bartlesville, OK 74003. Among the other M.A.D. Week events planned at BHS are the Parents' Night Out, the M.A.D. Week Talent Show and both a volleyball and a basketball tournament. The M.A.D. Week Parents' Night Out is set for Friday, May 2, from 5:30 p.m. – 10 p.m. in the old BHS gymnasium. Coordinated by the BHS Student Council, students and adult chaperones will offer youngsters – between the ages of four and 12 – several fun activities to take part in while their parents enjoy a night out. The cost per family is $15 for the first child and $10 for each additional youngster. For information, contact Lashbrook (336-3311, ext. 235) or download a registration form at www.bps-ok.org . The entry forms can be mailed back to BHS. Parents' Night Out gives adults the perfect chance to take in the BHS musical “South Pacific,” which is scheduled to take place on May 2 at 7 p.m. in the Fine Arts Center on the BHS campus. The M.A.D. Week Volleyball Tournament will be held from April 28 – May 2 during the lunch periods at BHS. Teams comprised of students will pay an entry fee to compete, and the money will go toward the fundraising effort for Gregory. The M.A.D. Week Basketball Tournament is slated for May 5-9 over the lunch periods. The M.A.D. Week Talent Show will hit the Fine Arts Center stage on Tuesday, May 6, at 7 p.m. Donations will be accepted throughout the performance. As part of the M.A.D. Week fundraising effort, the BHS senior and junior classes will hold a “Penny War” as money is collected. The BHS student council is playing a vital role in the organizing effort behind all of the M.A.D. Week events. “We welcome any donations during M.A.D. Week,” says Lashbrook. “The money is going toward a very good cause.” |
Funds collected from the 2008 Make a Difference campaign at Bartlesville High School will go toward the aid of senior John Gregory, who is battling cancer, and his family.
