The Bartlesville High School and Mid-High School orchestras will head into St. Louis this weekend with their spirits soaring.
Both groups excelled at the recent 2008 State Solo and Ensemble Contest, an Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association-sanctioned event which was held in Stillwater. Combined, they had 11 ensembles earn superior ratings.
The Mid-High orchestra won the OSSAA Sweepstakes Award for the sixth consecutive year, thanks to superior ratings for their stage and sight-reading performances in the State Large Group contest. The Mid-High earned the coveted Sweepstakes Award thanks to those superior ratings as well as the ensemble accolades including two superiors for quintets, two for quartets and one apiece for string choir and duet.
Both the BHS and Mid-High orchestras are headed to St. Louis to take part in a contest this weekend. The BHS group is directed by Rhonda Carr while the Mid-High orchestra is led by Greg Carr with assistance from Rick Dugger.
While the BHS and Mid-High orchestras have been gathering up hardware of late, the Madison and Central middle school groups have been collecting accolades as well. Both the Madison and Central groups took part in the Heartland Music Festival last week in Edmond. The Madison orchestra won the sweepstakes trophy for the day's best score while both groups were awarded for outstanding achievement.
Madison's Claire Malaby and Central's Pablo Lopez-Allue were recognized as outstanding violinist section leaders at the Heartland event. Greg and Rhonda Carr direct both the Madison and Central groups.
