Bartlesville High School recently released the names of its three semifinalists for the 54 th Annual National Merit Scholarship Program. The senior trio is comprised of Jennifer Cordill, Adam Mitchell and Sam Williams. Cordill is the daughter of Leroy and Karla Cordill. Mitchell is the son of Kent and Jane Mitchell. Williams is the son of Greg and Casey Williams. The names of the approximately 16,000 semifinalists across the country in the 54th Annual National Merit Scholarship Program were announced Sept. 5. The scholastically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 8,200 Merit Scholarship awards, worth an estimated $35 million, which will be offered next spring. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, semifinalists must advance to the finalist level of the competition by fulfilling several requirements. Approximately 90 percent of the semifinalists are expected to attain finalist standing, and approximately half of the finalists will be selected as Merit Scholarship winners, earning the Merit Scholar title. Established in 1955 specifically to conduct the annual national Merit Program, NMSC is a not-for-profit organization which operates without government assistance. Scholarships awarded through the program are underwritten by NMSC's own funds and approximately 500 business organizations and higher education institutions which share NMSC's goals of honoring the nation's scholastic champions and encouraging the pursuit of academic excellence. |
