Purpose:
Students will explore the chemical and physical properties of just eight of 109 elements known. They will classify these eight elements as either metals, nonmetals, or metalloids.

Materials:

  • test tubes
  • test tube rack
  • test tube brush
  • hammer
  • grease marking pencils
  • conductivity apparatus
  • carbon (C) (charcoal pieces or pencil lead)
  • zinc (Zn) (lumps or wire)
  • magnesium (Mg) (2cm lengths of ribbon)
  • aluminum (Al) (pellets or foil)
  • silicon (Si) (lumps)
  • sulfur (S) (lumps)
  • iron (Fe) (filings or wire)
  • oxygen/nitrogen (02 and N2) (air)
