Purpose:
How is heat transferred?

Summary:
Students record and measure temperatures of different quantities of water. Some water is heated, some cooled, etc. Students make mixtures of different liquids and record the resulting temperatures.

Process Skills Checklist

Materials (per group):

  • wire gauze
  • Four 100 mL beakers
  • Celsius thermometer
  • 100 mL graduated cylinder
  • glass marking pencil
  • Bunsen burner (hot plate could be used as heat source)
  • heat resistant gloves or beaker tongs

Safety Concerns:
Use goggles and aprons. Caution with fire and glass.
