Purpose:
Determine whether substances are acids or bases.

Summary:
Students participating in this activity will be able to identify acids and bases, using litmus paper.

Process Skills Checklist

Materials:

  • one student worksheet
  • a divided tray
  • litmus paper
  • ammonia
  • lemon juice
  • washing soda (sodium carbonate)
  • water
  • white vinegar

Safety Concerns:
Ammonia can cause nosebleeds and eye irritation. It should never be mixed with bleach - this creates a toxic nerve gas.
