Purpose:
Demonstrate acceleration due to gravity with objects of different horizontal speeds falling at the same rate and to determine whether mass affects the speed at which things fall.

Summary:
These activities create an opportunity for students to create experiments that explain acceleration and motion.

Process Skills Checklist

Materials:
For each group of students:

  • two marbles of the same size but different colors
  • two larger marbles of the same size
  • ruler with a groove down the middle
  • two books
  • three identical rubber balls
  • tape
  • string
  • student worksheet
  • scissors

Safety Concerns:
Common sense precautions; marbles may be harmful if swallowed.
