Purpose:
Students will demonstrate how a fuse and an electrical bypass work in an electrical circuit.

Summary:
Students will create a fuse, blow the fuse, and record what happens. Then students will create an electrical bypass, experiment with the alternative routes, and record the results.

Process Skills Checklist

Materials:

  • one student worksheet
  • one battery in a battery clip (a second may be needed for extra juice)
  • two alligator clips or 2 12" pieces of copper wire (20-22 gauge)
  • one bulb with a socket
  • one strand of Christmas tree tinsel
  • one pad of extra fine steel wool
  • one pair of tweezers
  • one clothespin half
  • tape
  • aluminum foil
  • paperclips

Safety Concerns:
Heat and electrical shock hazard.
