Purpose:
To use a model to demonstrate adaptation.

Summary:
Students will simulate different beak sizes with pliers and determine the most efficient beak in utilizing a limited food source. Each student in the group chooses a pair of pliers to use as a beak. Each is given a minute to try and pick up as many food items as possible. After the first round, students collect food simultaneously to simulate competition.

Materials:

  • various pliers
  • various hard shelled nuts
  • calculators

Safety Concerns:
Do not eat or drink. Use caution with pliers, especially during competition.
