Purpose:
To observe the effects of adding organic and inorganic catalysts to hydrogen peroxide.

Summary:
Students will observe the reactivity of hydrogen peroxide when the following items are added: manganese dioxide, raw liver, raw potato, cooked liver, and cooked potato. Using this information, they will try to develop an explanation for the observed reactions.

Process Skills Checklist

Materials:

  • beakers or disposable tongs
  • H2O2
  • raw liver and potato
  • cooked liver and potato
  • manganese dioxide
  • tweezers
  • thermometer
  • pH paper
  • wooden splints

Safety Concerns:
Do not eat or drink. Use caution with manganese dioxide.
