Purpose:
Students will observe a variety of living cells and become familiar with basic cell structures.

Summary:
Students will observe cheek cells and onion cells, practice staining techniques and observe differences between plant and animal cells.

Process Skills Checklist

Materials:

  • toothpicks
  • glass slides
  • cover slips
  • methylene blue
  • onion
  • Lugol's iodine solution
  • paper towels
  • compound microscopes

Safety Concerns:
Lugol's iodine solution is poisonous if ingested. Iodine solution can be an irritant to skin and eyes and will stain clothing.
