PASS Strand: 5. Matter, Energy, and Organization in Living Systems
Objectives:
- As matter and energy flow through different levels of organization of living systems and between living systems and the physical environment, chemical elements are recombined in different ways by different structures. Each recombination results in storage, use, and dissipation of energy into the environment as heat. Matter and energy are conserved in each change (i.e., water cycle, carbon cycle, nitrogen cycle, food webs, and energy pyramids).
Time Range: 3rd Quarter; 22 days for Strand 5
Suggested Teaching Strategies:
- Discuss cells, tissues, organs, and organ systems
- Relate Ecology & energy usage
- Populations & food chains
- Web of life
- Describe the formation of carbohydrates, steroids, lipids, proteins
- Review the breakdown & usage of energy - cellular respiration, water cycle, carbon cycle, nitrogen cycle
