PASS Strand: Local Objectives
Objectives:
- HIV/AIDS
Time Range:
REASSIGNED TO GRADE 10
The district is required by state law to teach students about HIV/AIDS in grades 7-9 and again in grades 10-12. Consequently the approved HIV/AIDS curriculum is taught in grade 7 (Life Science) and then in grade 10 (Physical Science/Honors Chemistry I). Teaching the topic in grade 9 (Biology I) would not satisfy the mandate to teach it in grades 10-12, and grade 10 (Physical Science/Honors Chemistry I) is the last time students are all taking only two science courses, so HIV/AIDS is taught during the 10th grade science classes but NOT assessed in quarterly assessments or other curricular measures.
MANDATED Teaching Strategies:
- Discuss how diseases are transmitted
- Vocabulary terms, terminology involved in HIV transmission
- Follow District AIDS Curriculum, including mandatory parental notification and opt-out procedures
Aligned Resources:
District HIV/AIDS curriculum
- Nurse presentation
- Role playing, ways to say no
- Sharing fluids activity (envelope game or transmission trap)
- Transmission Trail
- Vocabulary List
- Risky Business
