Form A: Separating Mixtures

Purpose:
Use selected physical characteristics of pure substances to separate a mixture of five components.

Summary:
After investigating the different properties of substances, identify a sequence of physical separations which will isolate each component of a mixture.

Materials:

  • funnels
  • Erlenmeyer flask
  • magnet
  • filter paper
  • distilled water
  • beakers
  • hot plates
  • clamps
  • salt
  • sand
  • powdered iron filings

Safety Concerns:
Use adequate ventilation. Heat is used.


Form B: Separation of Mixtures

Purpose:
Purify a sample of dirty water using techniques similar to real water treatment plants.

Summary:

  1. Decant
  2. Alum coagulation
  3. Add chlorine
  4. Filter with charcoal
  5. Test conductivity
  6. Distillation
  7. Test conductivity
