Purpose:
To compare physical and chemical changes as well as demonstrate definite proportions in compound formation.

Summary:
Salt is dissolved in pure water. When the water is boiled away, all of the salt is present again. Calcium reacts with water and shows the same increase in weight per sample.

Process Skills Checklist

Materials:

  • salt
  • calcium chunks
  • 100-150 mL beakers
  • hot plate or Bunsen burner w/ ring stand
  • litmus paper
  • conductivity apparatus
  • distilled water

Safety Concerns:
Heat is used. Avoid spattering salt and/or calcium hydroxide.
