Purpose:
To relate acid concentrations to the pH scale.

Summary:
Students will measure pH values as they add base to an acid solution. They will then use what they've learned to determine the concentration of an "acid rain" sample.

Process Skills Checklist

Materials:

  • Standard solutions of pH 1-12
  • Universal indicator or red cabbage juice
  • 0.10M hydrochloric acid
  • 0.10M sodium hydroxide
  • 24-well dropping plates
  • dropping pipets

Safety Concerns:
Caution using acids and bases.
