Content Standard 1:
Structure and Properties of Matter

Objectives:

  1. Solids, liquids, and gases differ in the energy that binds them together.
Local extensions:
  • The structure of solids, liquids, and gases differ based on the energy the binds them together.
  • Applicable gas laws summarize temperature and pressure changes affecting gases.

Time Range:
1st Quarter: Phases; 3rd Quarter: Gas Law; 7 days

Suggested Teaching Strategies:
The following topics relating to the objective are assigned to Chemistry I:

  • Relate the behavior of matter to the kinetic molecular theory:
    • Assumptions of the kinetic theory
    • Effect on the phases of matter
    • Effect of temperature and pressure on motion
Investigate the behavior of gases and use Boyle's Law, Charles' Law, and the combined gas laws to solve written problems.

Aligned Resources:

  • Core Lab 12: Boyle's Law
  • TOP Chem Lab: 10. Absolute Zero
  • CD-ROM - Chem A.S.A.P.:
    • Animation 1. States of Matter
