Purpose:
To observe the effect of both organic and inorganic catalysts on a cellular chemical reaction.

Summary:
Students will observe hydrogen peroxide in the presence of various organic and inorganic substances. Each class will generate possible explanations for their observations and will discuss ways to test those explanations. Class discussions will explore the concepts of catalysts (both organic and inorganic), cellular chemical reactions, and the effect of heating on enzymes.

Process Skills Checklist

Materials:

  • Beakers or disposable cups
  • Graduated cylinders
  • Hydrogen peroxide
  • Raw liver and potato
  • Cooked liver and potato
  • Manganese dioxide
  • Tweezers

Safety Concerns:
Do not eat or drink. Use caution with manganese dioxide.
