Purpose:
To make observations, form a hypothesis, and devise a procedure involving the electrolysis of water.

Summary:
Students observe the electrolysis of water, conduct an inquiry investigation, and compare class data.

Process Skills Checklist

Materials:

  • Golf pencils sharpened at both ends
  • wire leads with alligator clips at the ends
  • petri dish
  • tap water
  • 9-volt batteries
  • hand lenses
  • (optional = salt, sugar, thermometer, hot plate, deionized water)

Safety Concerns:
Petri dishes are fragile
