Purpose: To determine the amount of heat (calories) in pecans or other food substances.
Summary: Students burn a pecan using the energy released to heat a sample of water. Difference in temperature is measured and used (in addition to specific heat) to determine the amount of heat transferred.

Safety Concerns:
Wear goggles & apron; use flame precautions. Beware of soot on flask! Use a paper towel to wipe as much soot off as possible before washing.
