6:
Interactions of Energy & Matter
Energy, such as potential, kinetic, and field, interacts with matter and is transferred during these interactions.

Objectives:

  1. Waves, including sounds and seismic waves, waves on water, and light waves, have energy and can transfer energy when they interact with matter (such as used in telescopes, solar power, and telecommunication technology).
Local: Waves (sound and light) have energy and can transfer energy when they interact with matter.

Time Range:
Waves: 2nd Quarter, 2.5 weeks
Sound & Light: 3rd Quarter, 3 weeks

Suggested Teaching Strategies:
CPO Chapters 11-14
2nd Quarter: Chapters 11 & 12 on Waves
3rd Quarter: Chapter 13 Sound & Chapter 14 Light

  • Students will define related vocabulary terms; use pre-reading guides to introduce them to the text; and fill in guided outline during class discussion.
  • Demonstrations:
    1. Differences between transverse and compressional waves using slinky and springs.
    2. The relationship between wavelength, frequency, and wave velocity. (Check student understanding through the use of worksheets.)
    3. Explain the concept of speed variation with change in media through demonstration with bell jar/door bell and refraction, reflection worksheets.
    4. Differentiate primary from secondary colors of light & pigment using light box, glow sticks, color discs, etc.
    5. The polarization of light using filters.
  • Have students measure the intensity of different sounds using the decibel meters.
